"And life comes to a standstill"

This is a fictional work created for a module called "Digital Image Making" that I studied in my first year in the Singapore Institute of Technology. The assignment required us to create a photo journal of humans and everyday life.

THE PUBLICATION:

passersby

[pas-erz-bahy]

noun

1. a person passing by

THE MESSAGE:

I rarely ever slow down enough to observe my surroundings properly. It has always intrigued me that we pass by tens, maybe hundreds of people a day and we hardly ever care enough to stop and take notice of them. What do they wear? How do they act? Where are they going? It is said that the people that appear in our dreams are people we have seen in real life. These familiar strangers are probably people that have passed us by during the day and we just never noticed.

Thus, aptly titled "passersby", this photo journal aims to document the passersby in my own life; people who even if I missed, must have had a minute impact on my consciousness, right?

THE REFLECTION:
To depict the effect of the passersby, I lowered the shutter speed of my camera to create a motion blur effect. The resulting images show the faint impression the passersby leave on me, though it is

never enough for me to actually remember distinct details about them. They are like ghosts. I took the time to observe how they interacted with one another, how they dressed, what they are doing... By placing myself in the observer's point of view and fading into the background, I wanted to tell fellow “kanchiong spiders” like myself that it is ok to not be in such a hurry in life, and instead take more notice the people or things around us.
